Prepatory Work for Group Housing Project

In Architecture Design Studio there are a lot of complications and problem that arises during the studio progress to avoid such issues, the studio in charge must do all the preparatory studio work before initiating the studio activities or introducing the design problem. In this article we have discussed some of the crucial steps that are supposed to be followed up before introducing a Group Housing Project in the Architecture Design studio;

1) Preparation of Course outline

  • Study of the syllabus, scheme of evaluation for the semester
  • Conceiving the format of the assignment package
  • Preparation of a draft design brief, with the scope of work for each stage, area requirements, schedule of submissions with timelines, references, etc.
  • Identification of an appropriate site, with location
  • Preparation of site plan, with site parameters, etc.
  • Discussion of the design brief and site plan with co-faculty and Dean/Director
  • Revision and finalization of the design brief and site plan
  • Identification of relevant case studies, a compilation of extracts of relevant development guidelines/building bye-laws

2) Introduction to the Design Brief

  • Powerpoint presentation introducing the assignment package
  • Distribution of the assignment package to the students and co-faculty, with a copy to the Dean/Director
  • Detailed study of the assignment package by the students
  • Finalization of groups for case studies and other group work and assignment of case studies to them
  • Addressing queries, if any, with respect to any aspect of the assignment package
  • Discussion on the work schedule for the next studio and schedule for the site visit
3) Introduction to the Site Visit

  • Visit the site, to gain a first-hand understanding of its location, size, orientation, parameters, linkages, adjoining developments, constraints, and opportunities
  • Addressing queries, if any, with respect to any aspect of the design brief and site
  • Discussion on the work schedule for the next studio – Preparation of site analysis report and conduct of case studies
4) Introduction to the Case Studies

  • Visit assigned projects for the conduct of detailed studies
  • Providing support in case of difficulty accessing projects, interaction with residents, etc.
  • Collection, collation, and organization of data and photos
  • Draft compilation of site analysis report and case studies
  • Feedback on the draft compilation of site analysis report and case studies Addressing queries
  • Preliminary evaluation of draft compilation, and declaration of grades
  • Discussion on the work schedule for the next studio – Presentation of case studies and site analysis
  • Presentation of final case studies and site analysis through power point presentation/wall displays
  • Feedback on the presentations
  • Evaluation of the presentations, and declaration of grades
  • Discussion on the work schedule for the next studio – Preparation of concept designs
5) Introduction to the Conceptual Design

  • Discussion on the meaning, need, and relevance of concept design
  • Preparation of concept design
  • Dialogue with each student on the basis and value of their concept design
  • Discussion on the work schedule for the next studio – Finalization of concept design
  • Individual discussions/further work on the concept design and block model
  • Discussions of select concept design to clarify, motivate and direct
  • The work schedule for the next studio – Presentation of concept designs, with block models
  • Presentations of concept design through PowerPoint presentations/wall displays
  • Feedback on each presentation
  • Evaluation of presentations and declaration of grades
  • Discussion on the work schedule for the next studio – Preparation of preliminary design
